I grew up near the Fingers
I grew up in Sunset Park Isles, on the streets near what everyone in the neighborhood calls "the Fingers." They're the narrow strips of land that reach out into the water, lined with homes and canals. If you've ever seen them from above, you know why the name stuck.
The streets are named for poets
Homer. Dickens. Dante. Poe. Tennyson. Longfellow. Keats. The streets curve and wind, and nearly every one is named after a poet. The neighborhood is sometimes called "Home of the Poets," and it turned 100 in 2024.
Why Sunset Park feels different
There are only a few ways in and out.
That changes everything. The traffic here is basically people who live here at night and people who work here during the day. There's no cutting through on the way to somewhere else.
When I was a kid, we rode bikes for hours. The rule was simple: stay in the neighborhood, don't cross Westshore.
That feeling is still here.
You'll see neighbors out for a sunset walk. Kids running around. People who wave. It feels safe, and it feels settled.
That's a hard thing to find this close to a major business district.
Halloween is a big deal
If you want to know what a neighborhood is really like, watch what it does on Halloween.
Sunset Park goes all in. Block parties, gatherings, and decorated streets, and it goes on for much of the month, not just one night.
The neighborhood association also runs events through the year, like movies in the park. It's a place where people know each other.
Schools in Sunset Park
Sunset Park is zoned for H.B. Plant High School, and for a lot of buyers, that's where the conversation starts.
I grew up in Sunset Park and graduated from Plant, so I've seen this up close. In South Tampa, many families choose the school zone first and the neighborhood second. That's a big reason homes in the Plant district draw a larger buyer pool and hold strong resale demand.

Location: why commuters choose Sunset Park
Sunset Park sits in one of the best spots in the region.
Both bridges. The Gandy Bridge and the Howard Frankland Bridge are both close. That's a big reason so many people who work in Pinellas choose to live here. They get the South Tampa lifestyle and a workable commute across the bay.
Pinellas employers. Raymond James and Jabil are both headquartered in St. Petersburg, and BayCare is in Clearwater. Plenty of people who work for them live here and cross the bridge every morning.
Tampa employers. The Westshore business district is minutes away, and Downtown Tampa is a quick drive. Companies like Kforce are based in Tampa, so you can also skip the bridge entirely.
Tampa International Airport. Tampa International Airport is roughly 10 minutes away, depending on traffic. If you travel for work, this matters more than you'd think.
Shopping. International Plaza and WestShore Plaza are both minutes away. So is the Henderson Boulevard shopping area, with grocery options and everyday errands.
Hospitals. Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, and HCA Florida South Tampa Hospital are all a short drive. That's a big reason this neighborhood works well for physicians and healthcare professionals.
Downtown and Hyde Park. Downtown Tampa, Hyde Park Village, and Bayshore Boulevard are all a quick drive.

What the homes are like
Sunset Park has a real mix.
Some homes are original mid-century houses. Some are Mediterranean and Floridian. A lot of them are new construction, and there are waterfront estates along the canals and the bay.
Here's what I tell buyers: Sunset Park is not one price and it's not one market.
Two homes a few streets apart can be very different. Waterfront value depends on the type of access, the views, the dock, the seawall, and the flood exposure. Interior streets and canal-front streets behave differently. So do homes near the neighborhood's edges versus deep inside it.
I think in streets, not ZIP codes.
How Property Taxes Are Changing in Sunset Park
The Sunset Park I grew up in looks very different today. Original ranch homes are being replaced by larger, more expensive new construction, and property taxes can change dramatically when a home sells or is rebuilt.

A note on flood risk
Much of Tampa's most desirable waterfront property is in designated flood zones, and Sunset Park is no exception. I grew up in a home here that flooded four times, and I still live in a flood zone today.
I don't tell buyers to avoid flood zones. I tell them to understand what they're buying.
Two homes on the same street can have very different flood considerations. Look beyond the FEMA designation. The home's elevation, construction, flood history, and potential insurance costs all matter.
Before buying, I recommend three things:
• Check the FEMA flood designation.
• Request an elevation certificate, if one is available.
• Get actual flood insurance quotes early, before you fall in love with a house.
